Randall Bertao is an explorer, not unlike his Portuguese ancestors who ventured in search of new horizons. What Bertao seeks is additional knowledge about wine that he can share with guests at Parcel 104. Bertao has accomplished much in his career, being one of only 74 people in North America and 120 worldwide to attain the level of Master Sommelier.
This achievement is the result of three years of studies, three days of examinations, and a lifetime of experience. Born and raised in California’s Central Valley in the town of Los Banos, Bertao lived on a dairy ranch operated with pride by his father. Bertao’s grandparents emigrated from the Island of Terceira in the Azores, and his introduction to wine came from his grandmother, who made her own wine throughout her life. Her final vintage was 1983, bottles of which Bertao still has to this day.
Bertao began working at a restaurant after his move to Los Gatos in 1974. About that time he began making trips to Napa Valley, where he continued learning about wine. It was his encounter with a 1961 Chateau Lafite that really began his interest in what makes certain wines special. In 1984, Bertao moved to England where he and a friend launched a restaurant, 34 Surrey Street, offering primarily American-style seafood and imported wine. He remained in London for ten years, meeting his wife there in 1988.
After his return to America, and prior to Parcel 104, Bertao worked at Los Gatos Brewing Company and AP Stumps. Bertao’s expertise is welcomed by Parcel 104 guests, whether they are wine savvy or novices. Using his unique talents, Bertao assesses his guests’ needs based on such considerations as their wine preference, previous experience, and type of meat.
His philosophy is simple: to provide guests with the feeling they have experienced something special by serving them pleasantly, efficiently and with quality wines that complement the entrees. The Latin phrase, in vino veritas, means in wine there is truth. Randall Bertao’s truthful wine guidance is of an unparalleled vintage.
